Actually defense spending as a percent of GDP is below our historical average and well below the cold war days. With that said that is spending so yes, it's part of the problem. The far and away biggest disappointment of the Bush years is his first two when they controlled it all. Instead of proving that they were fiscally responsible and bring the budget under control and overhaul SSI they proved that they are big government spending pigs just like every other politician. Vote Democrat or Republican and you either get a white pig or a pink pig. Either way you get a pig and they all feed at the same trough.
