Huge trade deficits are the result of consuming more than we produce both at the individual level (via negative savings rates), and the government level (via huge budget deficits). And that happens because of policies that promote consumption over savings. They have nothing to do with trade deals. If we want to eliminate trade deficits and the resulting job losses, we should eliminate the bad policies and replace them with savings-friendly, consumption-hostile ones.

None of the candidates are talking about the need to cut our consumption and increase our savings, though the Democrats do talk about the need for smaller fiscal deficits. We desperately need those policies, if we want capital to fix our infrastructure and build the new green energy plants, without borrowing from the Chinese.
