Good point!!!, … which leads to I imagine >>>

The laptop mfgs continuing to provide an air card slot for just that purpose---- upgrade to latest network technology. The prices of laptops have come down sharply, but still more expensive than most smart phones. I imagine most folks keep a laptop for about 4 years, and would want the ability to connect to the internet with the latest technology.

Did I read somewhere that one of the carriers is offering free wifi access at certain locations???? That plus the ability to transparently switch to the most cost effective connection should eventually enable the carriers to off-load data intensive traffic from the 3G network and reduce data pricing.

Handset sales were very good in both Japan and Korea during the 1st quarter. That should help compensate for some of the weakness seen in Europe....especially since Nokia isnt paying royalties anyway.

KDDI cuts annual oper profit outlook by 3.4 pct
Fri Apr 11, 2008 4:30am EDT

TOKYO, April 11 (Reuters) - Japan's No. 2 phone company KDDI Corp (9433.T: Quote, Profile, Research) lowered its annual operating profit forecast by 3.4 percent on Friday, citing higher marketing costs due to better-than-expected sales of its mobile phones.

KDDI said it now expects an operating profit of 400 billion yen ($3.92 billion) for the year ended March, down from a January forecast of 414 billion yen. The new outlook compares with a consensus estimate of 415.6 billion yen by 20 analysts polled by Reuters Estimates.

In Japan's saturated market, mobile carriers lure subscribers by offering high incentives today in hopes for profit tomorrow, and better-than-expected sales can hurt short-term profitability.

The mobile carrier, which competes against NTT DoCoMo Inc (9437.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and Softbank Corp (9984.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said it had 30.1 million subscribers at the end of March, beating its outlook for 30 million customers.

Prior to the announcement, shares of KDDI closed up 1.9 percent at 695,000 yen, compared with NTT DoCoMo's 0.6 percent rise and Softbank's 1.7 percent gain. (Reporting by Mayumi Negishi; Editing by Chris Gallagher)

Novatel warned today. They attribute the miss entirely to some missteps on their part and characterize the overall market as "robust". They also stated that they have seen no impact from parts shortages.
