There was a draft then. If there was one now, the war would be long over in spite of bush. Back then we all knew folks who were in vietnam even if six degrees of separation. Today most of us dont even read the news about iraq. We just want it to go away hopefully without a vietnam type loss scenario at the end.

>>.I don't recall Lyndon Johnson asking Americans to make any sacrifices.<<

And that turned out real well for the economy - and the war - didn't it ?

I don't recall LBJ even telling Americans he was going to war, until the escalation was well underway.

There was a 10% Vietnam War surtax starting in Q2 1968. I remember because I paid it.

Because it was for 3/4 of the year it was 7.5% for 1968 and 10% for 1969 and 2.5% for 1970 when it ended after Q1.

Imagine how much support there would be for the war if we all had to pay 10% extra federal income tax.

OK. Fair point. However, to claim that only Democrats spend gov't money is just silly Republican propaganda. In the history of the US, the Republicans have racked up more debt than all the Democrats combined...and that includes the spending in WWII!!

So it is a blatant lie that Republicans are fiscally conservative. I've never seen a fiscally conservative Republican in my life. Do they exist? Well, there was one. It was me. But now I'm a Democrat.
