Fact is Bush had six years to "win" this war, and he's punting it to the next President because he failed.

Soldiers are guys who train their entire LIVES for an event most of us hope will NEVER happen. When they get a war, it's like Christmas for them - of COURSE they don't want to let go. They don't get to decide whether they get to go to war or not, and except for W, they don't get to decide whether they get to keep at it.

Unlike a banana republic, this country has CIVILIAN control over the military.

The fact is, the problem they are addressing, hatred and terrorism for the US coming from the Muslim world, is not a problem the military can solve - they can only make it worse. A good start would be to stop covering for Israel and to force them to follow UN mandates and get inside the Green Line. That would win us ENORMOUS goodwill in the Arab world.
