They need to make profit when times are good. Because times aren't always going to be good. If they don't have R&D/exploration money you're gonna be paying a lot more for gas going forward.

If Exxon ain't making money, how come they posted the largest yoy profit EVER for a corporation?

To be fair, lots of companies are making more money today than 20 years ago. Is there some reason you think Exxon shouldn't be allowed to increase its profits?
