A black man walked in the last time I was there, and a guy near me at the bar muttered in a not-so-quiet way, "What's he think he's doing in here?"

No kidding? Hell, I thought that only happened in 60s-era Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama.

Good article, thanks. I've been out of touch but noticed another Obama blow up. The candidates are really put in a small box in this country in terms of what they can and can't say. I read the Obama quote three times and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Then read Hill's blast of him and went "Jeez...".

Thanks for posting that......I was born and raised in small PENNA town, and if anything that article is more optimistic than it should be. My home town has gone from 18,000 to 8,000 people and , as always, there are still 0 blacks and 0 hispanics living there. The coal mines shut down about 50 years ago....nothing significant has com e in to provide unskilled jobs. The first day of deer hunting is a holiday, and although they are religious (mostly catholic)....they are cafeteria catholics. In the coal region, unions were strong and sorely missed.
