But a functional system has checks and balances to catch that. They won't be perfect, but it keeps the level down.

The problem with libertarianism is those checks and balances are philosophically anathema.

"If anything, that tells me they are libertarians"

It is where those with libertarian leanings but rooted in reality wind up. I've danced the libertarian dance. It is a nice dream, but it is stuck in the ivory tower.

Like Marxism, I have every confidence that with small, isolated groups it can work and work well. The problem is that when you get enough people where social disapproval doesn't work any more, it falls apart.
