You can dismiss the idea without dismissing the idea'er (sinner). And without calling bad names. but with an understanding of their background and why they have those ideas, or accepting that you don't understand their background or why they hold so tightly to what is a rather... silly notion. to make it ever, perhaps, purer, a simply wrong notion. so do they get a seat at the policy table? no. are they dismissed in a personal way or called names? no. i understand why some people i know think the world was created in 6 24-hour days. would i let them make policy based on that notion? no. but that is not the same as writing the person off, it is dismissing the idea and their ability to let it affect others within my realm. the person has as much standing as ever as a person. i feel, and maybe i am wrong, that how you say it... you are dismissing people, not simply ideas a person has. and there is that enabling thing again. to allow someone to have their beliefs is not enabling. it is respect. to have a stand on what and will not guide policy, is a whole nother thing. frankly, i wouldn't allow anyone in either domestic nor foreign policy who is a strong believer in the rapture. they are too given to promote policy to bring it about... ala middle-east war. the sooner the rapture the better for some true believers. but they will believe what they will. and i would never call them stupid to their face, and i hope refrain from doing so behind their back. (tho i am quite bad to do it. gets me all a'twitter, it does).
