so why are we opposed to mccains gas tax plan for the summer or my suggestion we put some of that emergency oil on the market. Lets spend some of that money on other stuff. Before you have long term solutions you might need some instant fixes.

The short term reasons I've heard to oppose the McCain plan are 1) it will lead to hoarding and a massive imbalance as the summer ends (I think this has been tried before and that was the result), and 2) that the gas sellers will pocket a significant portion of the difference.

My reason is different. When the problem is too much gas inefficiency the solution isn't to enable more inefficiency. I've said many times that you have to focus on the energy client (in this case the vehicle) instead of the energy itself. Put a stiff tax on inefficient vehicle registrations and use the proceeds to give tax rebates to efficient vehicles. When you register your Escalade each year it costs you $3K... when you register your Prius you get $3K. Watch that change the dynamic.
