In 25 years of Republican deficit spending, we've only had one Dem POTUS,and he was a deficit hawk and eventually squeaked out a surplus. Then Bush comes along and takes it all back with his irresponsible tax cuts and expensive war. He wasn't a deficit hawk. He got lucky on the economy and had the good sense to ride that puppy. Not that I don't appreciate his doing so, only that "deficit hawk" is a bit overstated. In any event, the POTUS has relatively little to do with spending or taxation. It's the congress. Both the Dem candidates now are pledging pay as you go strategies. They're either fooling themselves or trying to fool us. With some success on the later, it would seem.

PBS had a half hour program that presented health care programs around the world. Germany has a great one but in all the Doctors are not earning the tremendous salaries that they are here. Everyone has to agree to certain charges.. When I was counseling for college so many of the students wanted to be a Doctor for the huge salary, fewer for the good they could do.. There has to be a mind set all around and it's difficult to change someone who has had a lot vs someone who has never had and is willing to work for less. Another generation. The program is only 30 minutes but it surely shows how a universal health system IS possible without being exorbitant.
