Both Bill Maher and MSNBC covered this last night. He was in the Hitler Youth at 14 like all boys his age, but apparently that did not mean being a Nazi party member (probably not allowed for minors I would guess). It was a totalitarian state that told people where to go and what to do, and that's what the kid (which he was then) did.

I knew lots of South Africans who opposed apartheid and did their stint in the army rather than go to jail. Ditto Yugoslavs who had no interest in communism.

If you can turn up anything except surmise, which says he was a Nazi party member or ever said anything in support of the Nazi cause, please post it. Because your conclusion isn't "fair" absent that, based on the analysis I heard.

And I doubt if Maher would have explicitly retracted the Nazi comment had it not been inaccurate. He obviously didn't enjoy the exercise.
