Intelligence and honesty -- two traits that are reviled in today's world.

In American politics, the big lie is that we don't need to face up to the rot and decay of our national finances. Some politicians will say we need to face up to the rot and decay of our most valuable infrastructure -- our educational system. But none will say that we need to actually pay for it. Not a soul will talk about raising taxes, ending deficits, paying down debt and improving public services where it matters. None will tell you that global warming can only be addressed by charging a gas tax that will at least double the price at the pump.

In the end we will get what we deserve -- we will get the timid, stumbling irrelevant government, the inept fumbling feeble government, the kind of government that is completely unable to provide leadership in the public sphere. Our finances will rot. Our education system will rot. Our competitive advantage in the world will rot. Our influence in the world will rot. Our wealth will rot. Our environment will rot. Our cities will be known more for crime than for civilized pursuit. And we will blame politicians and government -- we will blame them because they did not tell us the truth. And they will not tell us the truth because we would recoil in horror at the thought that this is our problem -- our doing -- and we have nobody else to blame but ourselves for being so shortsighted, petty and small minded.
