The two most abused terms in public political discourse tend to be socialism (totally warped from the right) and fascism (totally warped from the left).

I just tune out anyone who uses either one.

To my knowledge there is only one reasonably serious socialist in American politics--Bernie Sanders, the US Senator from Vermont.

As it happens, I was reading the thread and listening to Colbert and Sanders concurrently. The points that Sanders made didn't sound any different from standard liberal fare. If what he said is typical and given that he calls himself a Democrat/Socialist, you can understand why folks might confuse your basic liberal big welfare government with socialism.

Here's their definition. The key terms in that definition is "control". I see the key as control of the economic system. Obama isn't even close to that. Nor is universal, single payer health insurance.

Universal single payer health insurance is not socialist, but Obama keeps calling it nationalized health insurance and has also called it Socialized health insurance. So he wants to mandate the insurance companies do it and mandate how they do it, then that is fascist. And yes I believe he would love the entire country and the entire government to be socialist or at least fascist.
