When I'm driving down a highway and see a lot of litter by the side of the road, I don't consider that license to throw my trash out the window. My small effort doesn't clean up the highway, but at least I am not adding to the problem.

I agree with that, but that analogy doesn't fit the point I was making. Er, trying to make. My quip was in response to a comment about the large and increasing use of coal in China. We're talking humongous orders of magnitude here. When faced with that news, running out buy a Prius in response is risible.

Not throwing a candy wrapper from the car given the masses of litter is not the same as running out and buying a car given the masses of pollution. Not driving when you can walk would be the equivalent of not tossing the candy wrapper.
