Tim -

I don't think we can reasonably assume that an invasion would have killed more innocent civilians.

I understand the argument that the firebombings and atomic bombings shortened the war, and thus may have saved lives overall. But I don't buy it. I think they were morally reprehensible acts. I don't see this as a completely black and white question, however.
