That exam was one reason I would never become a college historian; I wrote my answer to the question then went back and inserted "As Smith said" and "in contrast to Johnson's thesis" and so on.

I got an A or A- with the comment from the TA grading it, "You could have done more to compare and contrast various historians' views on the question."

I was interested in the event and the issue, not the academic ping pong that happened around it. I realized then that the profession of history was much too insular for me, as much as I loved studying history itself then.
