Anyone that drives around the city regularly knows that congestion and parking is a problem. The mayor is fighting all sorts of battles trying to correct it. Every day I work I am forced to leave my house 15-20 minutes early because of the difficulty of finding parking throughout Queens. In almost every instance, there are plenty of spaces at meters, but I can't use a meter because I'll be working for 7 hours. Most meters are only good for 1, 2, or 4 hours. I can't keep going in and out to feed the meter because I am busy working. So I drive in and out of the blocks causing traffic for 20 minutes looking for a spot and eventually take one in front of a private house somewhere. Then I screw that guy up when he comes home and can't find a spot in front of his own house. There are tons of people in the same exact predicament as me. I don't know how much money meters generate for the city, but the city has to buy them, install them, maintain them, replace them, pay a meter person to collect the money, process the money etc... My guess is that if they were all removed it would take a microscopic increase in income tax to make up the shortfall and no one would even notice. That would have a huge benefit to all people in their commutes, in traffic congestion, parking availability, pollution gas consumption etc... (I could park immediately instead of driving an extra 20 minutes) The other knucklehead thing is alternate side of the street parking. Don't even get me started on that total waste.
