Well, hell, we ARE dependent on ME oil. WTF? Is that news to you?

When the president (this one, or Clinton, or any before -- dating back for decades) refers to "national security" in the context of the ME, he's talking about OIL. Only after 9/11 has it taken on a dual meaning of protection against terrorism. National security means having access to every drop of oil we need.

Yes, we need to become independent, and nothing will make that happen faster than $10/gal gas). But it takes time and money, and when you can still buy gas for $4/gal, there is not a lot of interest in it.

When we cannot even get our own legislature to open up ANWR, you know damned well the interest in energy independence isn't up on anyone's list.
