From all I've seen, these two men had a decent friendship, of longstanding- as many of us do- even when the people involved do not share all our views. And even though I feel Obama tried hard to be gracious, he was forced to say things about this religious leader which I do not think were deserved. I have no doubt Wright feels incredibly maligned- and he has been. I was watching X today. When you hear the words of Malcolm, and you think about the stronger words of MLK- and you think about the Panthers, and some of the other real warriors of the black community, and then you think about just how many black men are in prison, and how the drug "war" was structured, I can certainly see why a man like Mr. Wright might still be angry- very angry. There is not *just* a history of racial problems in this country, there is a current, and very real, crisis in the black communities, and some of it is a direct result of America's (mostly white America's) *war* on drugs. I think many people in America need to hear Mr. Wright. One reason I think Obama is important is because he is a bridge between the two worlds- black and white- and he will give hope to people of color, and also (if elected) teach them that America really does have room at the top for qualified black men and women. I'm glad Wright is speaking out. IMO there cannot be too much talk about race- people in this country have been sniping about it for years. The black community is still angry, and has a reason to be (I mean that man riddled with bullets at his bachelor party- ridiculous. If that had been a white man- do you think the verdict would have been the same?). And white people are bitched out about losing their traditional position of superiority. I say "Bring the cancer out in the open and get out the knives. Cut it out now, so it doesn't get worse." IMO that's a more important issue than getting Obama elected. Obama is just a part of the solution (maybe) to that problem, but that problem is bigger than Obama, and one we must solve.
