Agree on all that, for now. The point is the future is coming. Either we plan for it, or things get inexorably worse (if I'm a candidate, that's exactly what I'm saying).

If crude is gonna hit 200 by 2010 or 2012, lots of alternatives become viable and sooner than most think. That's all good, the sooner we're off the imported oil teat, the better.

For now, for sure driving a used non-hybrid Civic, Corolla, Geo Prizm are more cost effective than any hybrid (and by a large margin). At 10 bucks a gallon (i.e, $200/gal oil with carbon use tax attached), people will be thinking of not driving at all, or using plug in's, motor scooters, or public transit (in the few places that's an option). $250 clownbux (before inflation) a gas tank will be quite a wake-up call....
