I am going to call you Eeyore. :) Children are capable of surviving and succeeding despite dysfunctional families and poverty. (have you read The Glass Castle?) At least with health checks and some academic preparation, you even the field a bit as they enter school. What would your alternative be? Let them fail? Assume defeat and do nothing? We have to give children the best we can. Or maybe you are just saying that the fact they head to the abyss is sad. true. DId you look at the paper Syb posted a link to from the NIEER? After 40 years of the program, there is plenty of evidence that the program works.
