I'm afraid I expected this moment. Well, obviously, not this precise moment but a moment, perhaps several, in which the struggle between a reasonable way to elect presidents and the way we've morphed into over the past three or four decades would collide with one another. And the outcome would depend on emergent factors, items we couldn't see. So I still have some hope that emergent factors will appear. It has, in my own defense, been a primary campaign in which emergent factors have been at least as important as constants, if not more so. But I'm definitely not placing bets.
