Most grew up in poverty, crime and the worst schools imaginable. They never got a chance to get to "affirmative action".

The entire point of affirmative action was to give these very people a chance to make a life for themselves. That many did so is suggestive that it WAS not only possible, but readily doable, for those who were determined to make it happen.

Look, I don't dismiss the point. These peoples' lives were made more difficult by the slavery that ended 150 years ago.

But Buchanan is right -- this country has done more for this group of people -- the ones who are alive today -- than any other nation has done for its black population.

david > "Blacks who are 50 and younger have had tremendous advantages due to affirmative action, the Welfare State, and other freebies from the government. "

I have often been a critic of the welfare state and affirmative action as well. However when a sentence is structured as above, it implies bigotry on the writers part, not to mention ignorance on the economic conditions of blacks in the US over that period.

What he should have said is welfare and affirmative action benefited black folks didnt take advantage of the largesse of white folks and failed as usual to make progress. Because thats what it sounds like he believes. As i said to him in an earlier post, paleo cons like him and buchanan are unable to separate themselves from their biases much like the rev wrights on the left. And what i said to MM is that obama should make this a generational issue and not so much race. Whether its sharpton or david or wright or buchanan the anger and bigotries are out of place in todays america with todays youth.
