This whole thing reminds me of an incident years ago now, when I decided to sever ties with someone who was prominent on SI just because I didn't want my name associated with his public conduct in any way. Took a lot of flak from him and his followers, some even to this day.

Obviously in hindsight, that would have been the smarter choice for Obama, though he would have paid a social and political price in other quarters, no doubt.

On the grand scale of dumb things he could have and stupid choices he could have made in life, I personally don't rank this one above a misdemeanor. Today may be the last day I even give it much thought. Others won't let go of it for....forever, probably.

I just want to see an election about policies to address what voters care about most right now. Loudmouth preachers rank pretty low.

>>Wright is a bum. There was a whole lot of defense of the man on this board a few weeks ago. I hope those who did that see the errors of their ways.<<

Bob -

I think it's more a question of being able to reevaluate the man given more information, and in the light of his more recent behavior.

I, for one, make no apologies for giving Wright the benefit of the doubt previously, and for pointing out that the great majority of his sermons were pretty mainstream Christian stuff as far as I could tell. I do acknowledge errors when I make them, but I don't see this as being one. In fact, I'm still not standing in judgement of Wright as being any worse than other men of the cloth who presume to speak for God, trying to give their own political agendas the imprimatur of a diety. That's a behavior I find galling and hubristic in anyone.

What I especially didn't care for was Wright's behavior in implying that he was speaking for Obama.

By the way, I must say that I find the tone of that last sentence of yours to be somewhat parental. I don't know why you would presume to correct others in that way.

- Allen

I don't see the problem. He's not that different from other people in the black churches. If you've been around the black churches, or people from them, he's just not that different.

Seems to me Wright is pretty much what I thought he was- and he is what he is, and he is a product of his times and the black church. Obama obviously doesn't believe all his views, which is a good thing if he wants to get elected.

I don't think Wright is a bum, any more than Al Sharpton, or Jesse is a bum. He's a self promoting black minister whose church has done a lot of good, and he's not a perfect man by a long shot.

<<<Wright is a bum. There was a whole lot of defense of the man on this board a few weeks ago. I hope those who did that see the errors of their ways.>>>

Wright was a Marine. He served his country as Bush and Cheney did not. He has a vision for America that is different than my vision for America, but he has every right to express his views.

He was for twenty years Obama's friend and mentor. Don't tell me Obama didn't know how this man thinks. Obama is smart. He knew exactly where this man stood. Obama IS like any politician. He used Wright to gain credibility and to establish a base for his political future.

Now there is a problem, and I don't blame him for the route he has chosen. He has to throw Wright, his friend and mentor, under the bus. He has no choice. It is understandable.

Obama is no different than Hilliary, only he is not as good. He is a politition or trying to learn how to be a politician. He has big learning curve ahead of him. Don't pretend he is something different.

He's acted a fool lately, but his life's work is a testimony to his basic goodness.

History is full of men who lived solid lives but lost their senses in dotage.

Don't fail to see the good he's done just because he couldn't handle fame.
