They aren't pure abstract logic, but they are statements open to logical analysis, and the claimed facts can usually be checked.

Its mostly facts (or claims of facts) and logic (valid or not), to the extent you are really encountering arguments from authority rather than arguments based on facts or logic, than you should heavily discount (in some cases even totally discount) known biased sources, but that applies equally to bias for reasons other than financial interests.

Krugman is providing his opinions on the subject as an academic.

When he published an academic paper he is. His regular columns are often political hit jobs.
