I think Obama doesn't need to separate himself from Rev Wright as much as he needs to separate Rev Wright from Trinity Church & the mainstream black narrative.

I am a bit surprised he hasn't made this point more forcefully. The main sound byte from his press conference the other day was more about how Wright has hurt him and his campaign.

Political expediency is not reason enough to throw the pastor under the bus - but that the pastor has become an obstacle to reconciliation and has essentially aligned himself with Farrakhan.

It is possible Obama doesn't look at it this way - then it's another red flag

<<<Moreover, best I can tell, Trinity is the model of what a church should be, given its many very good works.>>>

How do you think most white people just getting to know Obama will think about the very radical black church, with its black liberation theology, that Barack belongs to?

This church, if you go to their website has attitude pretty much like the way Rev Wright described as the difference between the University of Michigan marching band and those from a very black college.

You think dems will be able to keep reps from making Trinity United Church of Christ an issue?

Trinity United Church of Christ is central to the character and soul of Barack Obama.

John, all churches have similar outreach and charitable programs.....the bigger and wealthier they are, the more programs.

Where Trinity departs, and oversteps its purview, is the extent to which it injects political ideology. This is why it's under investigation and finds its non-profit status threatened.

As for Wright, my guess from the beginning has been that he's basically a con artist, in the tradition of the typical tent revivalist con artist, just on a bigger, more prominent scale.

I suspect an investigation would find a money trail leading to Wright's hand being in the till, so to speak. His building an overly large, overly expensive retirement home in a white gated community speaks volumes to me as to his priorities.

Most people grow less attached to material possessions as they grow older.....devout Christians even more so. I could be so wrong, of course, but I suspect Wright is just one more hypocritical, sin-filled religious figure that ends up disappointing his followers and turning people against religion.
