For me on the other side, i began to worry when i saw the lawlessness in bagdad and saw the pictures of the unattended ammo dumps. So even though my hopes were still high when bush spoke that day, my head was already processing negative stuff that i was witnessing in real time on TV. Come on John, give it a try. Come on John, give it a try. No one will think less of you if you had a moment when you thought it might work. Depends on your definition of "might work". I never, at an moment, thought it was worth it. And I always thought the repercussion would be dire. But early on I didn't expect the nation building exercise, which turned a really, really bad mistake into a catastrophe. Now if we had toppled the regime and immediately withdrawn our troops to Kuwait, with the clear message to the Iraqi's that it was up to them to install a decent government that was inclusive of all factions, it might have been a better outcome at least short term. Our military would have looked very strong (now it looks impotent), and they might of complied with the real threat that we could come back in on a moments notice if they installed more bad actors. Yes the Baathists would have still been in power, but who cares. When the original plan is flawed, it's near impossible for a war to bring any good. But we added even more mistakes, and continue to add more mistakes. It's the worst policy train wreck in US history, including Vietnam (although Nam cost many more lives).
