There seems to be not much differentiation between "America is under the curse of God" and "GD America".

Seems to me that there's a very legitimate basis for differentiation. One is being damned by god and other by a human. God is entitled, humans not. Now I recognize that there's a human putting words in god's mouth, but as long as you frame it as god doing the damning, there's a difference.

So why has there been a media furor over one and not the other?

There's also a legitimate difference between the words of a close friend, spiritual advisor, and mentor and an ordinary endorsement.
