Now I recognize that there's a human putting words in god's mouth...

I have a real suspicion of almost anyone who claims to speak for God.

Point taken re friend vs endorser.

I can't agree with that difference (rather, I can't find it meaningful). Seems to me that when Rev Hagee says New Orleans was destroyed by the hand of God because of gay behavior, he is presuming to know the mind of God based on his understanding of the bible. Basically he's just attributing to God what HE believes, what he wants to be true. And the sermon Wright preached did the same thing, citing Biblical quote after Biblical quote for justifying why God would Damn America based on its actions, only he was a bit more activist- where Hagee was passive- (who me? NOno, GOD wished it!). That seems about the same to me. They just choose different sins to justify the damnation and serve their own personal hatreds.

As for the endorsement... McCain did solicit Hagee's endorsement and he also refers to Rev Parsley who preaches war and destruction on Islam as a spiritual guide.
That should be a bit alarming.

Personally I don't believe either McCain or Obama think like these men, and I won't be making a decision based on their associations with them. More telling is how they handle the problem.

>>There's also a legitimate difference between the words of a close friend, spiritual advisor, and mentor and an ordinary endorsement.<<

Karen -

I agree with you that there's a difference between claiming that America is cursed by God, and invoking that curse.

I also see that there's a difference between the words of a close friend, etc., and an endorsement. What I'd question is whether seeking the endorsement of someone with repugnant views is actually worse, better, or just equally as bad as knowing someone who has them.

The fact of knowing someone, or even being close to someone who has such views is still not, to my mind, evidence of sharing those views, nor of some kind of defect of character.

To my mind, seeking the endorsement of such a person could be viewed as worse. Particularly in the case of McCain and Hagee, since the former has called such religious zealots "agents of intolerance" in the past.

If Obama had not known Wright personally, and was just now seeking his endorsement, I think people would be more justifiably upset.
