Lane3, I don't mean to rehash all the previous arguments but Mary's point is valid. The real answer is we don't know & can't predict with any degree of accuracy. All we can do is make reasonable assessments, projections and address reasonable solutions If the train leaves at ten, you're an hour from the station, and it's already quarter to ten, you've already effectively missed the train your analogy is linear and climate,ecosystems etc are non-linear. The butterfly effect is a cliche but true; small, infinitesimal changes can a have huge impact down the road. Apathy & Hysteria are both wrong

It's a waste of resources.>>> Good analogy but the logic leading to your conclusion is weak and therefore your conclusion is way off. We know the train is leaving the station but we don'tknow if it is 10 O'clock today, tomorrow, or next week. Even if we are an hour away and the train leaves in ten minutes, we are still not going to give up. If it is an existential struggle, we are going to do all we can to get to the train statin before it leaves. Who knows what can happen, the train can be temporarily delayed or we can call ahead and have people try to keep the train from leaving. Or just maybe the train has been rescheduled. Not doing anything is silly.
