Forget about the special interest groups. I certainly have. Doing something to spite the special interest groups is fine if it's free to you and me or if we get good value for our investment. Otherwise it's known as cutting of your nose to spite your face.

There are costs in chasing down the holy grail. If nothing else there are opportunity costs. When money is working here, we have money that's not working there. Simple economics.
