No it does work that way given the green revolution GMO's etc.

Look at the food available in reasonable wealthy countries, you don't have to even look at the richest (where there has been an explosion of variety), but even down the line, and you can see the middle countries get some extra variety from trade. Than in the poorest, when you move up from substance farming, you also have more variety (not that they have a lot after such development, but that they had very little before).

If you want to keep people poor and starving because it fits your conception of sustainability, don't expect me to sign up.
