Iraq is what it is. It has oil and that puts in more on the front burner. I guess you are right because without oil saddam would never have moved from nuisance to giant problem over the years. But i still maintain, US was after sea change in the politics of the middle east and getting WMDS away from bad players. Oil could just have easily been secured by dealing with saddam like the europeans were beginning to do again but that wouldnt have acceptable to the left either and it would have been labeled as cozying up to dictators. You cant have it both ways John.

oil was tangential to the iraq war. Anything but. Oil was (and is), legitimately a factor. But like he first said, it was tangential. If one looks at the REAL reasons we are at war in Iraq, one stands out far above the others -- the idea of democratizing Iraq bringing about a more moderate [and free] influence in the region was tremendously appealing in reducing the influence of the extremists who attacked on 9/11. All the other reasons pale by comparison. Whether it can be done is still subject to question, but if it is successful, it will serve our interests well. By the way, the cost of the war to date has been 1/2 trillion, not 3 trillion. I know you guys are excited at the opportunity to mis-state the numbers, but you could at least try not to misrepresent the facts.
