Public opinion is fickle and unfortunately in a democracy it's all that matters.

The leaders have to account for this in their calculus - I know a majority supported the War initially but Iraq's location & demographics spelled trouble from the get-go.

I agree with that, but the reason our wars are not winnable is within ourselves.

It seems to me that one major contributing factor to defining an unwinnable war is when we can't tell friend from foe.

We've seen it in Nam and now in Iraq.
