One of our previous cats was a beautiful pure breed; he succumbed to a kidney disease endemic to his breed at nine years old. He might have still been alive today had he been bred tougher.

This time it was street specials from the shelter. But we don't feel we sacrificed looks or character. One is a jet black terror named Shadow who can literally vanish in the darkness, or even on a black leather sofa. The other is a beautiful tiger-stripe tabby with all white feet.

I feel sorry for pure-breds. Vets overseas would often scoff at them as "not real animals".

>>My hot button on animal welfare is the intentional breeding of pure-bred dogs to serve as family pets. I know lots of people have a special fondness for particular breeds, and will pay good money for them. But I believe that's wrong.

IMO mixed breeds, mongrels if you insist, make better pets; in general, less temperamental. But I wouldn't call anybody a bad name who wants a pure-bred golden retriever, for example <g>.<<

On these points, we agree completely.

I also don't see any real reason that anyone should breed purebred cats.

PS: I do have a special fondness for goldens, too. I could make an exception in their case, especially since they make such excellent seeing-eye dogs.

I work for the HUMANE society up here in Watauga County, NC
and we have a Rummage sale every summer and raise over twenty four thousand dollars so as not to have to put animals down.

Very humane area here and I love that.
