They knew that their brothers and classmates and friends were being forced to fight a war and die far from home for very unclear reasons, for countries that seemed to have little connection to us. I, too, was a member of that generation, and I remember the helplessness and fear that we all felt, and the agony of some of the phone calls (I had a roommate whose brother was killed). This was not some clearcut defense of an invasion, a retaliation for a Pearl Harbor, a battle on our own lands. This was about the bugaboo of stopping "communism" from spreading in very foreign lands... domino theory. Ha. You obviously have very strong feelings about Vietnam, but you do a disservice to those who protested- not just because they were stoned- that's laughable- but out of legitimate, considered, principled reasons. it MAY have been those who bought into the war who were the ones who knew little.
