No, no, no. The downfall of mcgovern had little to do with eagleton and more to do with mcgovern being totally out of the mainstream of amercian politics. Carter ran against mcgovernism to win in 72 and it was Teddy on the left launching an insurgency againt carter in 1980 that some think cost carter the election, along with iran and stagflation.

Eagleton was replaced on the ticket. Eagleton had received electroshock therapy for depression during the 1960s.

The ticket was George McGovern-Sargent Shriver (Arnolds' father in law)

McGovern would hae been trounced anyway.
