Dan;

I would not live under a system where one could lose everything they had worked their life for, due to an unfortunate and unexpected illness.

Fantastic perspective from a Canadian. Thanks for posting.

What about due to a crime, say an arson or a murder?
What about due to a tornado or a flood or a lightning strike?
What about due to a law suit?
What about due to an accident?
What about due to a rumor?
What about due to bigotry?
What about due to politics?

Would you live under such a system? If you would, and given that you do, what makes illness different?

Sawdusty -

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope your sister in law enjoys a full recovery, and no recurrence of the disease.

My Canadian girlfriend finds our system appalling, too.
