"So these are the people we need to pander to as we pick the leader of our entire republic, cynical burnouts with a centuries-old chip on their shoulder?

Does anyone else in the country want to live with that outlook on politics and life? Not me."

who asked you to pander to anything? or anyone? but thank you for making clear your attitude toward the people of a very large portion of your 'country'. perhaps you could simply evict them and make for a sunnier place.

i think you should maybe call yourself a northern/western something. not democrat. forget several states. forget several large groups of people. forget poor blacks in harlem. forget poor latinos in east LA. forget poor whites in appalachia. they are simply a... cosmic drain? i think obama should focus now on appalachia and the south. and show the people of this country who have been long forgotten that this is their country. they have died for it in war after war in #'s far exceeding the norm. they have mined the coal to light the houses and died for it. they have built the railroads and died for it. but now... the GW people don't want their coal. The railroads are built. The war is laughed at. It is no wonder the democrats lose time and again. At least the republicans pay lip-service to caring. And any of you even bother to speak well of Edwards? Oh, right. He is a rich boy. But he is pure Appalachia. I thought the Democratic Party was the party of Heart. And I'm sorry you don't understand the Scot-Irish. They did a lot to build this country. Including the 1st victory in the revolutionary war when it looked like it would be a rout by the British. And then what? They were blacked out by the English rich of this country.

Not all will support anyone. But any president of this country should support all 50. and make that apparent.

I'm beginning to conclude that Obama has less of a problem getting white voters than either Kerry or Gore. If that turns out to be the case, the argument certainly shifts.

I've also pretty much concluded that the bulk of the Obama problem with the low income white vote is fairly specific. It's definitely not limited to Appalachia but as an electoral issue he does quite well with white voters outside Appalachia.

Speaking as a Scots-Irish guy myself. I think Webb over glorified my ethnic tribe. Much worse can and has been said about us.

eeek. i have been terribly awful, i know. i hope you can forgive me and not chastase me tooo much. you are a kind dale. i think of you when i want to say something horrid in response to someone. sometimes that makes me angry at you. if only dale weren't so nice, i could rip it up. but it is good to be tempered at times. obviously, it does not come easily to me. and this appalachia talk has got me seriously grrrsome. i am trying hard to ... temper myself. how tacky to suggest you be a western/northern something, tho. i apologize.
