I think more people are taking mass transit or carpooling in addition to cutting down on multiple trips. Cost of gas is certainly altering the driving patterns amongst relatively well to do people.

I could never understand why people spend idling their vehicles in a line at Costco gas stations for saving .05. Typically stations in the vicinity of Costco GS are priced competetively.

I absolutely love $4/gallon gas. It is clearly enough to cause lots of people to change their driving habits. Took a bike route today that crosses lots of busy roads. Most of the roads were actually nearly deserted in the middle of a Saturday afternoon! It was wonderful waiting 0-15 seconds to cross the roads instead of the usual 1-2 minutes.

Only down side is that if prices stay this high the economy is clearly going into the toilet.
