Hi Koan,

Up until the 60's all of the people in the entire world, for all of history, EVERYONE!!!!, lived their lives according to some sort of social - religious/dogmatic script handed to them at birth by their parents and society. Still true in most of the world today.

In the 60's people started figuring out that one does not have to live their lives according to a social script handed down to them by their society and parents. Each person has the right to live their lives however they want as long as they do not hurt anyone.

I agree... that was/is the core of it for true hippies. Although some were intellectual/readers, many others were more into living in the moment without what they considered "all that left-brain baggage".

The late 1960's was for me a wonderful time of idealism and innocence that I do not expect to experience again.

The post essay is not by Allen Watt
------

The 60's was not about any people, any events, like the war, or civil rights and certainly not about music.

What the 60's was, was the first categorical, secular awakening of mankind to existential thought

Ya, that is pretty much one of the commonly accepted "intellectual" pieces of dogma: that it was simply an organic, spontaneous outgrowth just when the time was right. You are parroting one of the storylines designed for dissemination by the mass media complex. A certain number of cubbyhole stories are always conceived of then chosen before any stage of culture creation is initiated. These cubbyholes are designed to appeal to different groups of people, so almost anyone can find a mass niche occupied comfortably by many others. This keeps most people from looking any deeper, beyond the boundaries of their chosen media-mythology niche and maintains the illusion of a cultural milieu. It is very scientific crowd control made possible by mass media program (meme) downloads.

Nothing new, profound or helpful there to those seeking truth.

I absolutely agree that the movement was about breaking down dogma and societal structures . There are always good things that are allowed to happen, have to happen, when controlled social movements are created in order to bring about change. The fine, creative things of the movement will never be allowed to come to fruition and dominate over the destructive long term goals of the movement's creation, by those who created it, unless we, as a whole, choose to follow the creative lessons, and not be sucked into the longer term traps that were created, purposely, by the movmement, namely the rapid acceleration of the separation of generations and breakdown of the family unit. Much of the progress in human/humane living made by the 60's counter cultural movement died out pretty quickly. This was due too generation seperation. Separation of the generations is a relatively new social phenomenon, and just as the (never trust anyone over 30) generation gap separated the hippies widely from their parents, it separated the next generation, by design, from the hippies. This is very simply done, the programming is literally changed, and the next generation is downloaded with a new set of programs through TV, education, movies, books, etc. So for now at least, we are stumbling into the trap of the new technological serf society with ipod/cell phone pod people smiles on our faces. Video game dreams on top of ice cream please along with my idol american pie. So sweeeeeeeeet, swallow it down, it'l make you feeeel goood. It's all good ain't it? Serfs up!

The Hippie programming was designed to go right to the latent seed ,that all humans posses, for unbridled self expression and freedom guided by conscience. The ground for the Hippie movement was prepared by media program distributions such as Jack Kerouac and the beat generation. It was initiated by downloaded command sequences such as pop culture and mass media seed events (Monterrey Pop Festival, Woodstock). This heretofore latent need had remained largely unexpressed through recorded history as a result of the suppression by the very same inbred elite that now found it useful to bring it out, and then manipulate and use it. They could bring it out now as they had newly perfected, efficient tools, far beyond the capabilities of the old tried and true, but relatively inefficient use of overt power. These psychopaths who are in charge have studied us well and for a long time. Even though they don't themselves have the aforementioned attribute of conscience, they have a diabolical knowledge of how to exploit such "weaknesess". These are the so-called royal (and this extends far beyond visible royalty) blood lines, maintained for their "sacredness". Well, the big joke on us is that the only thing sacred to these folks are the ruthless traits of psycopathy, to be bred for through their long-running, generally inbred, reproductive program.

As long as we keep stumbling along, believing the accepted dogma that the Hippie and other large scale movements were simply organic, self-generated, spontaneous phenomena, we will never have a chance of integrating the useful positive aspects of those times. The most dangerous lies are those that are wrapped in lot's of truths, kinda like a double fudge and strawberry sunday, with nuts, but someone slipped some poison into the cherry.

It is supremely difficult to recognize and then admit to ourselves that we have been taken in by a grand ruse. We are all taken in, and most remain so until death, as we are born into a system dreamed up and initiated long ago. We think it is natural. We are brainwashed by overt and covert Social Darwinistic meme bombardments leading us to the conclusion that society is generally moving in a natural way, evolving logically in the only path it really could, based on natural laws. That is B.S.. We are brainwashed. Many other radically different paths were possible, but we have been shepherded along inhumane/inhuman paths throughout recorded history.

from another set of eyes on location:

An exasperated Abbie Hoffman once described the scene as he remembered it thusly: “There were all these activists, you know, Berkeley radicals, White Panthers … all trying to stop the war and change things for the better. Then we got flooded with all these ‘flower children’ who were into drugs and sex. Where the hell did the hippies come from?!”

your explanation is too west-coast centric. You left out The Beatles and Dylan and music, generally. This was world wide, included Liverpool, and was not just from California ("e.g. Berkeley students").

Wow Koan,

...and a mere 45 years later, just look at us now. I'm really proud of the 60's generation...not! From the greatest generation to the most f'ed up generation in one generation.

Insight is a beautiful thing (existentialism and the other philosophies, psychologies, spiritual, and religious belief structures)...but look specifically at how they have helped and/or hindered quality of life. Just look at the crop of political leaders the 60's generation has managed to put forward.

Call me disappointed in my generation...I'll cop to that. All of these beliefs can be a useful counterpoint to a culture over-focused and identified with greed and materialism. But overall, the 60's generation has left a flotsam and jetsam of of ideas and social experiments that will take a few generations to clean up.

Haps.
