You can try "gonna" but that has more a declarative intent than "fixin' to".

The most mystifying expression in South African English is "just now". When I first met my wife there, I assumed it meant what it said.

In fact, "just now" can mean two minutes, 20 minutes, I don't really plan to do that, let's do lunch or are you nuts?

"Fixin' to" can work the same way, LOL.

Honestly, I have two university degrees, but was nearly flummoxed in finding a suitable substitute.

I've been using "about to" for six decades. I never perceived a need for an upgrade.
