The Muslims did not invent algebra, though a Persian Muslim did write a famous book on the subject."

Everything is built on a foundation.

Much of what we know as algebra was put into place by the Muslims. The notation, the ubiquitous variable 'x', the ways problems are set up and analyzed.

Muslims are also responsible for the concept of zero.

They gave us the "X"? Algebra is ancient - predating Islam. Yes, there have been Muslim mathemeticians who played a role in developing, preserving, and especially transmitting cultural things. But Muslims of 800 years ago weren't moderns anymore than anyone else was at the time.
