And Democrats won't carry white working class voters in the GE no matter who is elected. But if Obama can turn out a few million new young voters and bring in more suburban independents, he has a winning combination.

Well, there is an additional strategy which is to reduce the white working class deficit. It's definitely not monolithic as even the little bit about Appalachia testifies.

My wife grew up in a white working class family in a white working class town in western Illinois. As I recall, Obama carried the town in the Illinois primary. You can argue it's because he is the Illinois senator but then that makes my point about variability in the category.
