...however long that is. We will have a referendum in November on whether the American public will accept an open-ended commitment. The notion that we should wreck our military and bankrupt our treasury even further because the Iraqis need to knock each other around for another 20-30 years is not going to go over well in the American public, even if some believe a moral duty is involved. Lebanon has barely stabilized after 30 years of unrest. Do we really think Iraq will do any better with their gross social cleavages? Eventually our need to look to our own self-interest has to prevail. The US is not an infinite resource.
