Even though the FLDS are separate and pretty alien to the mainstream Mormon church, we feel something of an affinity for them. The media claims of possible sexual and physical abuse of small children was hurtful to us. It spills over to us in a kind of guilt by association type thing. For example, David Archuleta, a 17 year old Mormon kid was competing in American Idol during this time period. He and his family live in Murray, UT, and they live next door to my oldest daughter's in-laws. The street is a cul-de-sac and the Archuletas and the Ashtons are the two houses at the very end. David Archuleta received all kinds of threats. The theme was generally a twisted linkage of him to the FLDS ideology sprinkled with homosexual inferences. It built to a point that he was given bodyguards. Several weeks ago, after he became a finalist, he came back to a big staged homecoming in Utah for a few days. There was surveillance on this cul-de-sac street the whole time....dampening the festivities and making all the residents on the short street uneasy. In fact, in watching the footage on TV, it was easy to spot his bodyguards with him in the ropelines, etc. Now that the contest is over (he was the runner-up), hopefully this will end. Personally, I think FOX news may have contributed to this. Their coverage of the FLDS thing was incredibly tabloid. Sean Hannity floated every rumor of wrongdoing by the sect and then some. And when some of the rumors were disproved, I didn't see any attempts to retract or correct the impressions that were left from the original coverage. This was the first time I saw just how insidious FOX can be when it decides to go tabloid on a story. OTOH, I did stop watching FOX and may have missed any coverage that was more evenhanded. At any rate, let me join you in saying that it will be a relief to see the small children reunited with their mothers....assuming the state of Texas backs down now. I'm not opposed at all to having some pressure put on the members of this sect to better educate their children and postpone marriage, but this raid was pretty brutal. And the unsubstantiated charges that were made by the state and then acted on are worrisome in terms of personal civil liberties.
