If you make it past 80, people who are moderately overweight live longer.

I lived next to Laguna Hills "Leisure World" for 40 years. There are no over-80 fat people there. They all die in their 70's.

I took a good look at my situation last year, and decided that to I reduce my weight 50 pounds and maintain it there would involve a reduction in my quality of life that I will not accept. I would rather enjoy the way I live now and possibly die sooner.

You've got cause and effect mixed up there. People with severe debilitating diseases lose weight and then die extremely thin. Being thin didn't make them die. It's dying (which can be a very slow process) that made them thin. Think cancer.

That what skews the statistics. Take out those who are dying with severe eventually fatal diseases, and the statistics will change completely.

It is better not to be overweight.

Re: "If you make it past 80, people who are moderately overweight live longer."

The benefits of what is thought of as overweight start well before age 80. The benefits for being on the high side of a supposedly "healthy" BMI are apparent from people in their 60's and older.

This site has an excellent series of articles on the so-called "obesity paradox".
