I would extend it to include "generalizing," which somehow also has acquired a negative aura.

I think that's because people confuse it with stereotyping. Same thing for characterizing, which also is confused with stereotyping. Much like labeling, they have an evil rider and people can't differentiate between the element and the rider. So they want to ban labeling, characterizing, and generalizing, all healthy and necessary mental activities.

I would argue the opposite. The more we learn about life and Nature, the more apparent is the deep unifying truths that lay beneath and connects it all. Labeling, characterizing & classifying may be necessary but we've to be careful to not let it cloud the bigger picture.
