It is most often encountered in liberal websites, papers, periodicals, etc.

They think they are being kind (pity the poor brown people) but children from the nation where my folks are from are raised to have a very high self-image (as is the case with a number of Latin American nations) and the idea of being pitied or being seen as a victim in any way, shape or form really runs counter to everything my parents sought to instill in me.

I think the term was first pushed by the Jesse Jacksons of the world in an attempt to increase their market share; but being "black" in the U.S. is not such a great thing that I want to emulate their experience by being "brown."

Among Latin Americans you see it used most often in reference to persons who are Mexican-Americans or of Mexican descent... once I was even chastised when I referred to a Mexican as a Mexican, a well-meaning liberal American informed me that they don't like to be referred to that way, they prefer "latino" or "brown." I was totally astonished.

Anyway it is an attempt to join an exceedingly diverse group of hundreds of millions of people under one victimology "roof" ... the problem is that many of these people have nothing in common with each other except, to a certain extent, a language (a lot of Mayans don't speak much Spanish so you have to bring in a Mayan who speaks both to translate it into Spanish, and another person to translate it from Spanish to English).

To me being "brown" signifies being weak and being a victim, and I want nothing of that.
